How To Use Capital One® Secured Mastercard®

Where Can You Use

  • It can be used anywhere MasterCard is accepted.

Pay Your Bill On Time

  • You need to make on-time payments. A late payment could hurt the credit score or the limit of your credit card.

Something About The Card

  • You need to make all payments on time to avoid incurring penalty fees (not to mention a hit to your credit report). Consider signing up for autopay so you don't forget. Making timely payments is one of the best ways to establish a healthy credit history.

  • You should consider increasing your initial credit line by making a higher-than-required security deposit. Doing so can help improve your credit utilization ratio, another major factor in your overall credit score.

  • Avoid taking cash advances, the fees for which can quickly increase your total amount owed.

  • You need to pay your regular balance in full every month to avoid accruing higher-than-average interest charges. Not to mention, carrying a balance can make it more difficult to demonstrate your reliability to card issuers.

"Ive had this card for 8 months and my credit has gone up 70pts!! I started with a credit in the 520s after 6 months they increased my credit limit by $300. Now my credit is in the 580s. I also had a closed accout not related to this credit card within the time I opened it til now that dropped my credit 17pts. I believe my score would’ve been higher had it not been for that. "

"I got the card to help improve my credit score and build my credit history. Everything was going good with card until Capital One decided to cancel it with no warning at all. I have no missed or late payments and no negative remarks on the account at all. I actually received an email the same day the card was cancelled stating I was approved for a credit line increase. When I spoke with customer service, I was told they cancelled the card because a payment was returned in August. It is now October and multiple payments had been made on the card since then. The returned payment was also a mistake with my banking information and was remade once capital one allowed me to make another payment. I was also told that even though my account was in good standing and had no negative remarks, it couldn’t be reopened and I would have to apply for an account again if I wanted to reopen it. The representative couldn’t tell me any other information on why the account was closed. I also had a payment processed the same day the card was closed. I had another credit card that they closed at the same time and gave me the exact same reasoning of why it was closed. "

"Capitol One does a great job of monitoring your usage. I applied for an increase at 5 months they denied it and 3 days later gave me an increase anyway. Capitol One is a good and fair company as long as you stay on top of your finances."
