How To Apply For A Credit Card
Credit card applications are straightforward, but you'll need to meet some minimum financial requirements to get approved for the best credit card offers. Learn how to apply for a credit online and what to expect after you click submit.
- Knowing your credit score and what's on your credit report can help you determine what products to apply for. If you have fair credit, for example, you may not want to apply for a card that clearly states that only applicants with excellent credit will be approved.
- If you don't have good credit, you may find it difficult to get approved for a card with a large sign-up bonus and a lucrative reward structure. Each credit card application ends up on your credit report, so the Nerds recommend using our credit cards comparison tool to find a card that fits your credit profile before applying.
- If the card allows balance transfers, you may request to have balances transferred from other credit card accounts to the new card.
- To apply for a credit card in the US, you’ll need a valid Social Security number and a positive credit history. The best rewards credit cards may require at least three to five years of good credit history, and some more than seven.

when applying discover will ask you if you are going to do a balance transfer and to submit the information, this WILL INITIATE the balance transfer so once you get the card there is NOT a need to request a balance transfer. If you applied with a balance transfer and you request one AGAIN once you receive the card, DISCOVER WILL complete BOTH balance transfers
"I decided to try this card based on NerdWallet reviews and so far so good. I was immediately approved within seconds. I decided to do as suggested in a previous customer review and call the 1-800# to see if they would approve me for an increase and they did! All within minutes of my online approval. Discover impressed me more than my own bank (Regions) whom I've had an account with for over 25 years. Not only did Discover make me feel like a person and not a number but I also love the fact their customer service is 100% US employed and they're available 24/7. Thanks NerdWallet and thanks Discover.
"I carried Discover as my only major credit card for more than 15 years. This past year, when I made a major purchase (a new bike for my kid), they wouldn't honor the Purchase Protection benefit when the bike was stolen (it was locked appropriately) from their school bike rack not more than 3 weeks later. Purchase Protection was designed to cover purchases up to $500 if they're lost or stolen within 90 days of purchase, which this was. I could verify purchase via receipt, provide a police report I'd filed, along with all identifying information, which is what was required. They still denied the benefit, saying it wasn't covered. Also, most of their benefits are opt-in, which seems counter-intuitive if you're really trying to give your consumers the most benefit. I don't want to have to opt-in to benefits and bonuses--all of the things that could save me money or give me cash back should be opt-out, not the case with some of Discover's benefits. With all the credit card companies competing for your business, I would definitely look elsewhere.
"Approval took 4 seconds and I was approved for 3X what my existing credit cards would give me.
"I was looking for a balance transfer card to unload a good chunk of debt incurred during a year of unemployment. My cedit is not bad, but, not so great either, so the credit limit offered on this card was adequate for my needs to pay off the debt in 15 months with no interest.
